Oct-Dec 2016East midlands Airport redevelopmentAs part of my brief for this year, I have been asked to re develop an existing space taking into account 'futuristic design'. During my Ireland Visit I passed through East midlands Airport, and I was shocked by the outdated design and cramped conditions. This set the scene for a perfect project - seeing as I had already had first hand experience visiting the site. This project was a 2017 Learning Technology DIGI Award winner

Jun-Aug 2016On a visit to Dublin, Ireland; I visited a variety of famous landmarks including the kilmainham gaol and Collins Barracks. These buildings (and the Jaol particular) are classic examples of 19th Century Iron cast buildings. I also visited the Modern Art museum and became fascinated by a particular piece in the Hennessy art fund (see below) It distinctly reminded me of The Shard (london). All intellectual rights belong to the IMMA Dublin.

The final proposed design was inspired by modern restaurant design and the use of colour blocking to make the space more interesting for students. A separate space for sixth form students was also proposed. (see below) A-LEVEL STUDIES; FIRST YEAR PROJECTThe Brief I was given as part of my design & technology studies was reasonably broad.
'Design a scaled down model influenced by'... The influence I had chosen was Architecture. The model I had decided to create was the London city hall which sits comfortably on the Thames bank, not far from tower bridge, London. A range of skills and materials were required to meet each detail for the model including the use of perforated aluminium sheeting and a range of processes such as vac forming. See below for comparison v actual model: Oct - Nov 2015During october 2015, I was commissioned by my place of study to produce plans and concept ideas on how the library space could be re-developed. The idea behind this project was to bring more of a 'relaxed coffee shop' theme to the space. I was asked to utilise new ideas such as the addition of 'podiums' where by a new 'laptop dock' system could be started.
The project was a great success, with work to re model the library beggining that November. Head Librarian left comments on the newly designed space; 'The Library was beginning to look and feel a little outdated so I decided that a change in design might help to improve the prospect of using the library as part of a wider learning environment. Jack agreed that a change might help to improve the library's image and came back to me having created a lovely plan for us involving opening up the space and adding new furniture with the aim of making the Library more accessible and appealing to the cafe culture. We thought rather than chairs and tables we would utilise new technologies by adding in lecterns for computer work encouraging a quick turn around of equipment. We also wanted to include comfortable seating for pupils and students to sit and read in comfort. Jacks plan's conveyed exactly what I envisioned and where tweaks were nessesary such as reducing or moving the location of library equitpment, Jack ensured that each detail was perfected. The re-modelling process began the following month and the results have helped to make the library look a lot friendlier'. 2014The experience of seeing architecture in a different cultural setting really did open my mind. This visit is one of the main reasons as to my interest in Building design. But Architecture is about so much more than building design, it's about the way a person interacts with a building and the purpose of that building. A lot of religious influence is evident in many of the buildings I visited in Rome. From this I can deduce that religion and power were a major influence on classical design. |
